SUSTAINABLE CAMPUS INITIATIVES

The Office of Sustainability is focused on reducing our carbon footprint to improve the world around us. Learn how we are making an impact that matters.

RECYCLING

The Office of Sustainability has developed a campus-wide recycling program to collect recyclables, including cardboard, paper, aluminum cans and plastics 1 and 2.

Look  for labeled recycling bins located across campus inside and outside residence halls, student activity centers and academic buildings for your convenience.

Large recycling containers or dumpsters, marked with an MSU recycling sticker or blue in color, are located behind most campus buildings.

COMPOSTING

Mississippi State Dining Servies has partnered with the Office of Sustainability to compost their coffee grounds.  Used coffee grounds are picked up weekly from Starbucks and Fresh Foods Café and emptied into the compost bin to be re-used by Campus Landscape.

HYDRATION STATIONS

Campus Services has installed dozens of hydration stations in residence halls and buildings across campus to reduce usage of single-use plastic bottles.  Every time you fill up your reusable, refillable cup or water bottle, you divert plastic from waste landfills and make a positive impact on the environment.

GREEN GRADUATION

Mississippi State University graduates can celebrate sustainably with bio-degradable confetti.  The MSU Alumni Association distributes eco-friendly confetti during its annual senior celebration for graduates to use for their photos and celebrations to help keep campus litter-free.  Graduates who are unable to attend the event are strongly encouraged to purchase bio-degradable confetti from a vendor or retailer of their choice.

TRANSPORTATION

Mississippi State students, faculty and staff can ride free with the Starkville-MSU Area Rapid Transit (SMART). Ten SMART routes link campus and the city of Starkville.
